Call for papers for International Conference on Water and Urban Development

Katholieke Universiteit Leuven is calling for papers for an International Conference on Water and Urban Development Paradigms to be held on September 15 to 19, 2008, in Leuven, Belgium. Deadlines for the submission of a paper/abstract and author guidelines are listed in the conference website.

Water is perhaps the world’s most valuable resource - clean water has even been touted as the ‘next oil’. Water has become a strategic (and shrinking) resource, a commodity; indeed, control of water has always been - and remains - a highly politicized affair. This proves as a major challenge as cities and urban areas are gaining an estimated 60 million people per year - over 1 million every week. This points towards the need for an integrated approach of city planning with the development and management of safe drinking water, municipal wastewater distribution, processing and re-use systems.

Four departments of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven) , in cooperation with the Interuniversity Programme in Water Resources Engineering and the Master of Urbanism and Strategic Planning have organized an international conference to address these pressing needs and which intends to bridge the gap between the disciplines of water management, ecology and the approaches of engineering, urban design and spatial planning. The conference will address both water and urban development paradigms, with a main focus on the integration of engineering, design and management approaches. Further details on the scientific as well as the social program of the conference, practical information on the registration procedure and accommodation, a view of Leuven as a venue and much more can be found on the conference website.
